Jackfruit (Ind: nangka) is a native tropical fruit of South and South East Asia.
Ripe jackfruit is eaten raw, the fruit tastes like a cross between a mango, an apple and a pineapple.
In Indonesia ripe jackfruit is eaten raw as is, or sliced and mixed with shaved ice dessert, or other traditional desserts. Very nice for fritters too.
You can find ripe jackfruit in Durban (quite expensive though). As for Cape Town, I always buy the canned ripe jackfruit from NEW ASIAN SPICE SUPERMARKET 186 Main Rd, Sea Point.
The can jackfruit taste very similar with the fresh one. Go have a try
